Depending on the insured peril, there are several ways to prove that the weather peril existed:
Closest hourly, daily, or monthly recording station - depending on the risk.
Qualified Independent Weather Observer.
At the time of the quotation, we will advise which is the closest recording station to the event site along with the time frame on obtaining this data. The data from larger stations, such as airports, is immediately available to us. Smaller stations, such as water treatment plants, can take longer to obtain the data and smaller stations can also be closed due to federal or state cut-backs. If a station is closed or the data is unavailable, the policy verification reverts to the next closest station, which may not be that close to the event. If the station is not close enough or there is a difference in elevation, terrain, etc., you should choose one of the other above options. If you would like to hire an observer but cannot find someone locally (i.e. someone from a TV, radio or weather station), call us and we will provide some local names. The cost is usually $20-$35 per hour, depending on travel time. If it is a multiple day or a week/month long event, most observers will negotiate a daily, weekly, or monthly rate. If for some reason the observer's report cannot be used, the verification will automatically revert to the closest hourly recording station. Reasons could be observer's non-appearance due to illness or not following required procedures.
Keep in mind that the option you choose will be part of the policy and will be the sole verification of a claim, unless the facility or observer is unable to produce a report.
